What a day...and a quiche recipe

For those of you who are still mommies...you know, of young children...you'll understand my day. My boys were rather tired from the weekend. An abundance of friends and parties, excitement and stimuli, candy, chocolate, cupcakes etc etc etc...and I even have some of the candy hid away for lunches.

They weren't too interested in getting ready and out the door this morning, so we dilly dallied and played and went to the grocery store to stock up on good for you items;), came home, ate, took naps and got up to play again.

I've been a mommy for 4 1/2 years and know without of shadow of a doubt that God watches over my boys and keeps his guardian angels rather close! They are boys, you know. 

But the funny thing is, I always think things are going to happen with the little one. Andrew walked earlier and had no fear...ever. Adrian was always cautious. Always. But he's the one who toppled down the steps a year ago and cut his forehead open. He pulled a small bookcase over on himself 6 months ago and today, the TV toppled over...just inches of him. He said his legs hurt, but the TV was mostly on the stand drawers, and barely on his feet.

Oh my poor boy, it scared the wits out of him. We moved into this house last summer and the living room had a built in TV stand...it's short, as in 6-8 inches off the ground and our flat screen sits on it. It rolls in and out, but we always keep it in. Next to it, there is a built in shelving unit for the dvd player, uverse receiver etc, and it has a drawer at the bottom that houses a lot of books and toys that I pick up off the floor.

So, we were playing with a set of Cars 2 cars and Adrian was telling me all the names, and went through all of them and found we were missing The Professor...so I asked him to look in the drawer next to the TV, no toy. So with out me asking, because we usually tell them NOT to open the drawers under the TV, he did and I'm not sure what happened next.  But when I turned around, he was on the ground, the two drawers were pulled out and the TV was on top of them. It smashed into the drawers I guess and he was right in front of them. The top of the TV touching his legs and feet. 

I'm so thankful it was a flat screen and not our ancient box upstairs that weighs a ton and would really do a lot of damage if it fell of you. I'm thankful the drawers are too low to the ground for him to have been able to have his legs underneath them when the TV fell. I'm thankful my little guy was not in his usual spot, but far away in the big chair looking at my phone and very preoccupied. I thankful Adrian knew I was there to take care of him and was all better once Mommy checked all the boo boos and we had some juice and shared a chocolate bunny.  

 My heart is full of thankfulness.

Since we had no TV, we played outside with bubbles, and colored and painted in our new Easter books, and I had time to make a quiche.

Spinach & Italian Sausage Quiche

1/2 pound of Italian Sausage

1/2 bag of spinach

chopped sun dried tomatoes

cheddar cheese, havarti and smoked gouda

4 eggs

milk

crust (I used Pillsbury ready made)

Cook sausage until done, add spinach and saute. Add pepper and onion flakes. On top of pie crust, layer gouda and havarti. Add sausage mixture on top. Top it with cheddar cheese. Whisk eggs and milk together and add S&P. Pour over cheddar and bake at 375 until done...about 45 minutes or so. It was heavenly.

Easter Craftsmanship

 As many of you know, I spent 3 years in Romania teaching English. I left almost 10 years ago. I bought the wooden carved eggs and the hand painted real eggs in a Magazine de Cultura Romaneasca (a Romanian culture store) filled with beautiful handmade and hand painted artifacts. I had 3 real eggs, but sadly they are real and they break...see the crack below. 10 years ago I didn't pay alot...seriously maybe a dollar or two. I think now, they would be well over $10 each.
I also had 5 glass eggs, but knocked them over when I was pregnant with Andrew...oh well. The other wooden eggs (with the natural details) are from Zakopane, Poland. I bought them from a street vendor. One day, we'll go back with both our boys and I hope they love the culture and beauty of Eastern Europe as much as I do.

The sweet bunny egg holder is from World Market. 

Everything in their Easter store is 50% off.

 We're hosting 10, so I set two tables, using only my Italian Countryside and her Limoges Butterfly and Gilbralter Iced tea and wine goblets. The napkins are all from Target clearance. The children's tableware is from Target 2010 after Easter sale. The silver is all my grandmother's.

 I changed my menu up a bit and I'll share the recipes next week.

Coconut Buttercream Easter cupcakes

 I've seen these on a couple blogs.

The nests, I first saw here, at Nutritious Eats. It's pretzels covered in chocolate. Then I saw them as cupcake toppers for Easter here, on Cupcakes for Party. 

So cute, and so easy. 

The icing is amazing! My friend Sheila, made sugar cookies for the Super Bowl and introduced me to Coconut Oil. She used the Wilton Buttercream Recipe, but instead of shortening, use coconut oil. I added drops of blue and green to get a Robin's egg blue icing color. The last cake recipe I did was a complete flop..."moist delicious cake" turned out to be dry and dense...so I paid 92 cents and let Betty Crocker do the rest:)

Easter with Limoges & Bavaria

 I went shopping in my mom's china cabinets this week and found these beauties! Can you believe it's not blue and white???

The green floral plates are Bavaria. She had two roses, four sunflower (?), and one carnation.

The sweet butterfly bread plates are Limoges. There are two different styles of these, as well.

The rest is my well played rattan chargers, Italian Countryside Dinner plates, my grandmother's silver, my goblets as usual. The runner was from an estate sale last year and the Bunny egg holder with the Russian paper eggs is from World Market.

Russian Easter Eggs

 I showed you these cute little Russian egg papers and boxes last week. These are the papers. I boiled my eggs first, then put the paper around the egg and dipped it in the simmering water til the paper adhered to the egg. Beautiful decorated eggs for our Easter table. 

 This sweet little bunny egg holder was on sale at World Market. I bought the S&P last year. 

Right now it's 25% off, plus I had a member 10% off coupon.

 I'll post the rest of the table tomorrow. I'm using some of my mom's Limoges and Bavaria plates. I just love shopping in her china cabinets, especially when she says I don't need to bring it back!

Muffin Tin Lunch

The weather has been beautiful here...perfect for an outdoor picnic. I used silicone muffin cups from my HEB in blue butterflies and red ladybugs. The boys ate wheat thins, Colby jack cheese,  salami, fruit snacks, and grapes.

Easter possibilities

   This week, I'm throwing around some ideas for an Easter brunch. I will probably just be hosting my parents, brother and a couple family friends. The only 'new' thing on the table are the beautiful Russian egg paper boxes...details at the end of the post.

I used the blue and white quilted runner my mom made, with the matching napkins. The napkin rings were a gift from her also...on her last trip to Russia. 

I set the table with rattan chargers, Italian Countryside dinner plates, Denmark blue dinner plates, Saxony saucers by JB and an egg box. 

A friend asked about my dishes last week. Perhaps, it's a bit deceiving when I mix things up. I only have complete sets of Italian Countryside and my infamous Indies Blue. These Denmark Blue, for example, I have 4 plates. They were on clearance at TJMaxx and I thought they were pretty and I could mix them in with dishes I already have. The saucers, I have 4 of them also, no cups. I hope to get some tea cups, but I'm patient:) They were a great buy on eBay, so I'm holding out!

The glasses are my usual goblets and cobalt blue swirls. As opposed to last week's mix of blue glasses which I only have two of each.  I have 8 of each of these, but I've had them for almost 10 years.  The silverware is my grandmother's eclectic mix. 

I got out the Easter basket...this is at least 5 years old from Target. It's filled with plastic eggs and nestled in with two bunnies from my collection when I was little. The salt and pepper bunnies are from World Market last year and the birds are from Pier One. 

   I'm still looking at recipes, buy I know I'll be making salata de boeuf. It's a Romanian potato salad with carrots and peas and pickles. It really is amazing! I'll post the recipe soon! I finally got a new dutch oven, so I'll probably be making a pork roast. My mom and friends will also bring some lovely things to the table!

  Here are the egg paper boxes. I think she thought they'd all be blue and white...but surprise! surprise! The details are exquisite! Each box has a plastic shrink wrap like wrapper that you can boil on an egg to made it cover the shell. 
I'll probably make the eggs and put them in a pretty dish and use the boxes for candy!!
